Internationales

"You never get a second chance for a warm welcome."

2021 - a year of flatness for international projects as well.
In 2021, what had already become apparent in 2020 became more firmly established. Projects with, for or because of international students had to largely be left hanging. And that for two reasons: On the one hand, the number of international students on campus has dropped sharply - hopefully only temporarily - and this is mainly due to travel restrictions or students' decisions to temporarily study from their home country.
On the other hand, projects for international students had to be cancelled due to the current guidelines or were not even applied for in the first place.
In 2021, we therefore had to focus much more on securing the livelihood of international students, and our Counselling Department did everything it could to advise and support international students, who were very often isolated.

The most important instrument in this was, of course, the bridging aid for students from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In a cooperation between the Communication Department and the Counselling Department, we allocated the funds in the bridging aid for students set up by the BMBF.

Despite the fact that many enrolled students were certainly not on campus due to travel restrictions, at all of our campuses the percentage of internationals who received funding nevertheless significantly exceeds their percentage enrolment. The effect shown is therefore likely to have been much greater in reality.

Perhaps also because financial emergency anchors - such as the KfW loan as a low-threshold access to money - were naturally out of the question for students without a German bail. Here we urgently suggest that the financial provision gaps be expanded in the future with adequate financing options that are also viable for international students.

We will tackle the revival of the International Affairs area beyond financial support in 2022. Plans for this, also with partners of the Studierendenwerk, have been in our drawers since the beginning of 2020 and are waiting to be implemented.
